this band was introduced to me by the man who has shown me more music than just about everyone else in my life put together. i speak of mr jayd mcferson. for those of you who know him i’m sure that that comes as no shock. jayd has more musical influence on others than anybody. he told me about this band some time ago but i never really listened to them that much until i saw the movie ‘friday night lights’. explosions in the sky scored that movie and had a large part in making it the incredible movie that it is. explosions in the sky are a quartet from austin, texas and make some of the most beautiful, driving music that i think i’ve ever heard. their most recent album, ‘the earth is not a cold dead place‘ is a masterpiece. though it only contains 5 songs (none of which clock in at under 8 minutes) it is definitely a full album. i highly recommend getting this album as it will really help you see that there is still some originality to be had in new music.
i was watching dave letterman last night and he was talking about how jack hanna, that animal guy, was going to be on the show. he started fumbling over his words and for some reason, it was just one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen. i don’t know why. i just kept watching it over and over. i taped it (with my video camera pointed at the t.v. , so it looks like crap) and i want your opinion. is dave still funny? or is it just me?
if there were a commercial for the heller family.org, this would be it. in fact, as soon as i get my own public access cable television show, this one is going to be in heavy rotation. my experimentation of earlier has finally been perfected (well, almost) and is ready to be unleashed on the masses. i know you’re asking yourself, ‘why does he waste his time with these pointless pursuits?’ that’s a great question. one to which i have no answer. i guess i think only of the betterment (or mild entertainment) of my fellow man. i hope you enjoy this.
this one is seriously an object d’ art. we walked into lily’s room one morning to find her sleeping in a rather unusual position. it was funny enough to record and through some creative editing, i believe that this is my best creation to date. you be the judge.
but no worries, everything’s just fine. yesterday afternoon she was having some pain and called the doctor and told him just what was going on. so, we went to the hospital and they hooked some stuff up to her and determined that she was having premature labor. they gave her a bunch of water to drink because they thought that she was a little dehydrated. that didn’t help so they gave her some shots and that didn’t do it either. after that they decided to keep give her magnesium sulfate and keep her for 24 hours and see what happens. that seems to have done the trick, but now she’s on bed rest for the next two weeks. we’re both pretty bummed out about that. but, anyway, everything’s just fine and she should be coming home any minute now…
UPDATE:
jana’s home now and everything’s cool. they have her on modified bedrest which basically means that she can walk around and do stuff, just not for too long. she’s only supposed to go up and down the stairs once per day (like that’s going to happen) and try to stay down as much as possible., also, she can’t lift anything over 5 pounds. i have a feeling i’m going to a lot more busy…
…so i started to thinking, ‘how do they do those? i should try and do that.’ so i did. i’ll admit it’s a pretty weak counterfit, but this was just my experiment to see if i could even come close and i think i did. try and ignore the really bad music editing as i was kind of rushed. maybe i’ll try and do a better one. though this attempt, small as it was, was really tedious and took a couple of hours so, we’ll see. anyway, let me know what you think, or if any of you have any ideas on how to do it better.
p.s. – i was in my pajamas as i recorded this. they’re not some sort of gay pants.
okay, i don’t want to boast too highly of my child’s skillz but this one is off the charts. so lily has been hanging out with our friend’s kids on occasion and they’ve taught their kids some sign language so that they can communicate more effectively before they learn to speak. it’s pretty cool. well, the other day our friend dena had been watching lily and when jana picked her up she asked jana if we’ve been teaching lily sign language also.
being the lazy parents that we are, we haven’t seen the need to teach our child any “signing” other than the little bits that she picks up from me in my moments of road rage. jana told her that we had not and dena said that she thought lily had been signing “more” to her. sure enough, when jana was feeding her later, lily would say more (as best as she can), and do the sign for “more”. they came to the office today and i made lily do it several times just to make sure. i would say more and she would immediatly do the sign.
is that crazy or what?! i went online just to make sure that this was legit and according to www.signingbaby.com, this is the real deal. so lily just picked all of this up by watching other babies do it. i’m thinking about having her teach me.
here’s a certified pro showing us that she also wants more.
i know this took a while to get up here, but better late than never i guess. this video is pretty long (almost 5 minutes) so if you have a slow connection, i wouldn’t even try it.
