music of the week: muse
this song is by muse.

this is the sixth track from the album. i had only been halfway listening to it in the car but something about this track jumped out at me and i listened to it a few times. i couldn’t quite place it. it was oddly familiar. and then it came to me. this IS radiohead. but not in the way that that new mat kearney single IS coldplay. this is what radiohead would’ve sounded like had they not gone the way of most mega-huge bands (smashing pumpkins anyone?). i’ve charted it out below if your curious just as to how this looks.

a friend of mine said that if i like this album, i’ll really love their first album as well. i’m definitely going to check it out. for the past several years, i’ve had the urge to hear some new radiohead, but everytime i pick up a new radiohead album, i’m bitterly disappointed. that urge is now satiated. and comparing these guys to radiohead (could I use the word radiohead a few more times?) is not saying that they’re a rip-off by any means. they’ve taken it to the next level. you listen and tell me that I’m wrong.

Thank you for saying what has to be said, but we are all afraid to say it.
you’re welcome. i walk the lonely walk, and sometimes it seems that i do indeed walk it alone. but i can’t lie to myself any longer. radiohead have totally lost it. there. i said it. again.
Steven does not walk the lonely walk on this one. there are many out there that share the same feelings.
My relationship with Radiohead has not been a smooth one. Ok, so years ago I hear this song called “Creep”. Very Pixies-esque, which is +10 for me, but not a direct rip-off. Nevertheless, i buy Pablo Honey. I’m not impressed. I found a few gems, but nothing that made me reach for the album more than a few times. So, in the cabinet it went.
Out comes The Bends. Having the rug pulled out from underneath me before, I choose to ignore this album. I hear “Fake Plastic Trees” on the streets several times, and even though I like the song, no album purchase for me. Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; (how did Bush put it).
So, I skip merrily down the street with a Radiohead free life. Then…Eros shoots me in the heart. Ok Computer comes out. I stubbornly ignore it at first. But, some well-respected friends highly recommened this one. I hear one song before the purchase (yes, I’m in love with an Android, but so what). Needless to say, This album is perfect. I dig it to no end, and I still dig it.
After that, we all know what followed. “Maybe things will be different this time,” “I know that they can love me, if they can just change”. “He promised he’d get help”.
I think I’m through with them. Fool me twice.
steve,
i do have to agree with you on a number of points you make in this stunning post. while i do feel there is more than some good sounds on subsequent radiohead albums, i too have yearned for more from a group that has so many promising lads.
i believe i was the one that stated you will love the previous muse album, not the first one, but the one previous to this latest one.
if you like invincible, check out “knights of macedonia” racing down i-90 with my 6 year old dancing and jiving in the back seat telling me this music is like being chased by the police through the forrest on horses has never been so awesome!
