new browser?

June 18th, 2008

so, let me let you in on my situation. i’m a mac user and for mac users the main web browsers are safari and firefox. yeah, there’s opera and flock and this and that, blah, blah, blah. well, i’ve been a safari user for sometime now. firefox is great and all, but safari is just sooooo good looking. being a follower of the bauhas “form before function” school of design, i was drawn to safari. now, it’s a great browser and all, but there’s just so much that you can do with firefox. i was torn. well, as good as firefox was, it was just too ugly to pull me in. that’s all changed with the release of firefox 3 today. i was reading about some of the new features and they actually seemed pretty cool. there were some new features that i thought i wanted to try out, so i installed it. turns out that they gave it a total facelift. it really looks a lot more like safari while still retaining some of it’s individuality. take a look.

this is my pretty safari.

and the new firefox 3.

as you can see, they now look much more alike. i think i can live with the new look of firefox, and i’m really excited to test out some of it’s new features. gve it shot if you haven’t already. I’m loving it so far.

    Totally agreed.

I floated all over the place; Firefox, then Flock, Opera for a while, back to Flock… but I always came back to Safari because it’s pretty. Browsing the web is supposed to be about, duh, the web. Other browsers add so much crap to the interface that it drives me batty. Yes, Safari is still a memory hog. Yes, Safari is still lacking some advanced functionality. And yes, Safari still doesn’t handle favicons well. But who cares, it’s so clean.

I am now an instant convert to Firefox 3. They finally figured out that Mac users like their interface clean and pretty. They found intelligent ways to “hide” the higher functions and finally, FINALLY made an interface that doesn’t look like it was stripped from the XP desktop of a programmer in Kazakhstan.

Seriously, huh? Firefox 3 really seems to take the browser to a whole new level. After I posted this, I got the following email from someone that will remain anonymous.

“Does the term “geek” ring familiar to you????? One thing I know is that I’ve been to the huge Apple store in London and you haven’t! Dude, you’re like a Muslim who hasn’t been to Mecca.”

Awesome. My hat’s off to the creativity of that comment.
