music of the week: the killers
this song is by the killers.
the killer’s new album, sam’s town, is a fast grower for me. i have to admit that i haven’t given their first album, hot fuss, much of a listen. oh, i’ve heard the hits and a few other tunes here and there and i really have liked what i heard but for whatever reason, i haven’t dived into it like i know i should. so, when i heard that they released a 2nd album, i bought it on principle but figured that i wouldn’t really listen to it much. luckily, i was wrong. this album is fast growing on me to be one of my current favorites.
for the uninitiated, how do i describe the killers? to me the killers, on the verses, remind me of one of my favorite bands, the loose. the loose are a garage/punk band that you’ve never heard of (though if you’re reading this, you probably have). their music is really disjointed all the way through. most of their songs were written by throwing 3 or 4 of the most cacophonous chords they could find and write really witty lyrics over the top.
there’s that funny boy / gorgeous big blue eyes
compliments my corduroy / then brushes me aside
what is in his head? / issues, questions, fears
when we talk he’s sensitive / but he looks bored to tearsyou say you wanna stay by my side
you say someday you wanna be my bride
you say you know the way i feel inside
you don’t know the first thing about me
for me, this is the killers, on the verses. when it comes to the chorus they really pull it together with these huge hooks that suck you in. and i think it’s the contrast between the two that make the choruses seem that much bigger. it’s like the pixies or nirvana. they did the whole quiet verse/loud chorus thing and it made the choruses seem HUGE. the killer follow the same principle with melody. listen to this song and tell me i’m wrong.
